Pakistan’s women rolled up a stunning win over England in their Women’s World Cup match at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium.
Skipper Fatima Sana launched her bowling early, taking four wickets for just 27 runs and dismantling England’s top order.
The Pakistan captain won the toss and chose to field as cloudy skies hovered over the ground. Fatima used the swing and seam movement early in the innings, removing Amy Jones, Heather Knight and Nat Sciver‑Brunt before the ball. England were rattled, just 39 for 4 after 6.4 overs. A brief cameo by Diana Baig bundled out Tammy Beaumont, but the top order could not recover.
England tried to fight back. Emma Lamb and Sophia Dunkley added a quick 15‑run stand for the fifth wicket, but Sadia Iqbal struck twice in succession. Lamb was caught on a sharp arm ball, and Dunkley was out lbw, sending England sliding to 79 for 7 after 25 overs. Alice Capsey’s brief counter‑attack was cut short when she was dismissed chasing a big shot.
Heavy rain interrupted the game for almost three hours, cutting the innings to 31 overs. When play resumed, Charlie Dean and Emily Arlott joined forces, adding 46 runs for the eighth wicket and giving England a chance to defend. The partnership collapsed when Arlott was run‑out, and Dean later fell in the final over, nudging the ball to short fine‑leg.
England closed at 133 for 9 in 31 overs. Because of the earlier wickets and the reduced overs, the DLS method set a revised target of 113 runs for Pakistan. Pakistan’s rain‑curtailed victory was only their first in the tournament and the first time they have beaten England in a Women’s ODI.
