At the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India’s women’s cricket team clinched their first World Cup title by beating South Africa by 52 runs. The final, played on Sunday night, sent fans into a frenzy and stamped India’s place at the top of women’s international cricket.
India chased 246 after a thrilling 298‑run first innings. Shafali Verma smashed 87 runs while Deepti Sharma added a steady 58. A solid opening partnership between Shafali and Smriti Mandhana gave India a solid start, and Richa Ghosh’s 34‑run knock helped the team finish 298‑7 in 50 overs.
South Africa had a good start, chasing 298. Laura Wolvaardt’s 101 off 78 balls kept them in the hunt, and Ms Tryon added 9 with a rapid 9‑run over to take the score to 78 runs required from 48 balls. But a sudden collapse in the 42nd over – including the top wicket of the innings – ended the chase, and the Proteas were bundled out.
The turning point came when Shafali Verma, the youngest all‑rounder, took two key wickets in quick succession. She dismissed Sune Luus in her first over and then removed Marizanne Kapp, tightening India’s grip on the match. Her twins were followed by a run‑out of Tazmin Brits, a slick hat‑trick by Amanjot Kaur earlier in the game that dismantled the opening partnership.
India’s bowlers were superb. Deepti Sharma snared five wickets for just 39 runs, while Shafali added two more for 36. Ayabonga Khaka also claimed three wickets for 58, and the rest of the bowling unit applied pressure, leaving South Africa fighting on but never catching up.
The victory makes India the first Asian nation to win the Women’s ODI World Cup. The final score read: India 298/7 in 50 overs – 87, 54, 34 – vs. South Africa 246/10 in 45.3 overs – 101, 35. Shafali and Deepti were crowned the stars of the day and the match finished with India winning by 52 runs.
Fans left the stadium buzzing, and for the first time, India’s women have topped 800 runs in a World Cup final. The triumph highlights the growing strength of women’s cricket and sets a new benchmark for future teams.
