The MCC has confirmed that it was right to call Pakistan’s opener Muneeba Ali out after a fielder’s throw hit the stumps at the R Premadasa Stadium.
On the last ball of the fourth over in the Women’s World Cup match between India and Pakistan, Muneeba survived a leg‑by‑leg (LBW) chance when India chose not to review. Replays later showed the ball should have been a wicket, but the decision stayed. She then stepped out of her crease and a throw from India’s all‑rounder Deepti Sharma struck the stumps. Muneeba’s bat was still in the air when the ball hit the wicket, so the third umpire, Kerrin Klaaste, ruled her out for a run‑out.
Pakistan’s captain, Fatima Sana Khan, begged the on‑field umpire to overturn the decision, arguing that Muneeba had grounded her bat. But the MCC’s clarification says the Law 30.1.2 – the “bouncing bat” rule – does not protect a batter who lifts the bat, only one who is running or diving toward the crease. “Muneeba was not moving toward her ground, she was standing in front of the crease, so the run‑out stood,” the MCC explained. The third umpire was correct, and the dismissal was a run‑out, not a no‑ball or a wicket taken by the keeper.
India’s win was decisive, as they posted 247 on a slow pitch and bowled out Pakistan for 159, winning by 88 runs. It was India’s 12th triumph over their arch‑rivals in women’s ODIs and lifted them to the top of the eight‑team points table.
Key performers for India included fast bowler Kranti Gaud, who took two wickets, spin all‑rounder Deepti Sharma, wicketkeeper‑batter Richa Ghosh (35 not out), and Harleen Deol, who top‑scored with 46. The next match for India is a one‑day game against South Africa on 9 October at Visakhapatnam, followed by a showdown with defending champions Australia on 12 October. Pakistan will face Australia in Colombo on 8 October.
