In Colombo, Australia beat Pakistan by 107 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, keeping their perfect World Cup record at 17‑0. The win moved the defending champions to the top of the standings with two victories and a no‑result from three matches.
Australia’s innings began badly, down to 76/7, but Beth Mooney turned the game around with a stylish 109 off 114 balls. She partnered with Alana King, who went unbeaten on 51, to add 106 runs for the ninth wicket. That stand broke the record for the highest ninth‑wicket partnership in women’s ODIs, and King’s score is the highest ever by a number 10 or lower batter in the format.
Australia finished 221/9—a total that is the third‑lowest in a Women’s World Cup with a centurion, after 211/3 against New Zealand in 2011 and 215/4 versus India in 2005. Pakistan’s spinners—Nashra Sandhu (3/37), Rameen Shamim (2/29) and Sadia Iqbal (1/32)—had early success, but missed chances in the chase cost them the match.
When the run chase started, Pakistan’s top order collapsed under the new‑ball attack of Kim Garth (3‑14) and Megan Schutt (2‑25), falling to 6/42 inside the powerplay. Sidra Ameen was the only batsman with a solid knock, reaching 35, while Rameen Shamim scored a quick 15. The rest of the team was dismissed by Australian bowlers—Annabel Sutherland (2/15), Ashleigh Gardner (1‑17), Georgia Wareham (1‑15)—and the team finished 114 all out in 36.3 overs.
A late partnership from Shamim and Sandhu slowed the defeat, but Australia’s depth and discipline proved too powerful to overcome. The final scoreline: Australia 221/9 (50 overs) – Beth Mooney 109, Alana King 51; Pakistan 114 all out (36.3 overs) – Sidra Ameen 35.
With this victory, Australia continues to dominate the Women’s World Cup, while Pakistan faces a tough road ahead.
