Women’s World Cup: Pakistan, New Zealand share points as rain inflicts fourth washout in Colombo

The heavy rain that soaked Colombo on Saturday turned the 2025 Women’s World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand into a washout, marking the fourth time the tournament at the R Premadasa Stadium has been rained out.
With the points table unchanged, South Africa has sealed a spot in the semifinals and joins Australia in the last‑four. New Zealand occupy the fifth place on the table, holding four points from five games, so their path to the semis is now very narrow. Pakistan, meanwhile, sit at the bottom, earning only two points from matches that were cut short by rain.
Toss and early play
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and wisely asked Pakistan to bat, knowing the pitch could turn wet. Pakistan’s openers, Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail, started cautiously, putting together a 30‑run partnership before Omaima was out caught by Lea Tahuhu in the seventh over. Jess Kerr then dismissed Muneeba for 22 runs in 26 balls.
The middle order, Sidra Amin and Aliya Riaz, tried to rebuild. They were 39/2 at the end of the power‑play, adding a 22‑run stand before Lea Tahuhu took Sidra’s wicket for just 9 in the 13th over. After Sidra’s dismissal, it began to rain, giving a one‑hour, 36‑minute break and cutting the match to 46 overs a side.
Resumption and the second rain break
When play returned, Pakistan were 52/3 after 12.2 overs. Aliya and Natalia Pervaiz steadied the innings with a brief 24‑run partnership. Then Eden Carson broke the rhythm in the 19th over, and Natalia was caught by Devine at long‑on. The next over saw Fatima Sana, Pakistan’s captain, out to Amelia Kerr for just two runs, leaving the side on 80/5.
Sidra Nawaz joined Aliya at the crease, but another rain interruption halted the innings again to 92/5 in 25 overs.
Heavy showers and a full washout
The rain didn’t ease. It grew heavier and the match faced a possible 36‑over-a‑side format, but the downpour continued. In the end, it was a full washout – the fourth one at this venue.
Next steps
Pakistan will play South Africa in Colombo on October 21, hoping to salvage something from a winless campaign. New Zealand’s next game is against host India in Navi‑Mumbai on October 23. The 2025 Women’s World Cup continues to hinge on weather, making every match a test of skill and resilience.
