Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first in the 18th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The decision followed a strong opening display against New Zealand, and captain Chamari Athapaththu said the team felt ready to repeat their success.
South Africa made three lineup changes before the game. The new players – Sune Luus, Karabo Meso and Nondumiso Shangase – replace Anneke Bosch, Sinalo Jafta and Tumi Sekhukhune. “We’ve had good results chasing,” said South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt. “Batting second is fine, especially with the rain risk. We’re getting used to the conditions that look different at this time of year.”
Sri Lanka’s XI remained unchanged from the previous match: Vishmi Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu (c), Hasini Perera, Harshitha Madavi Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshi de Silva, Piumi Badalge, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Sugandika Kumari, Malki Madara and Inoka Ranaweera. Athapaththu added, “We train hard and trust our plan. Whoever plays better will win.”
South Africa’s squad for the game was: Laura Wolvaardt (c), Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, Marizanne Kapp, Karabo Meso (wk), Chloe Lesleigh Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, Nondumiso Shangase, Masabata Klaas, Nonkululeko Mlaba.
The match promises an exciting showdown in the 2024 Women’s World Cup, with both teams eager to secure a win and boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
