After a crushing loss to Australia in Indore, South Africa’s Women’s ODI World Cup squad is focusing on moving forward. The final group‑stage match ended with Australia taking the win by seven wickets, but South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, said the team will use the experience to get ready for the semi‑final.

Alana King of Australia had a record‑setting spell, taking 7‑18 in 24 overs and reducing South Africa to just 97 runs for 7 wickets. Beth Mooney added 42 and Georgia Voll was unbeaten on 38 as Australia ran through the Proteas. King earned Player of the Match honours at Holkar Cricket Stadium.

The defeat marked South Africa’s ninth straight loss to Australia at World Cup level. “We didn’t get the runs we needed, and we didn’t win the game the way we wanted,” Wolvaardt said after the match. “But we’ve done a lot of good things this tournament. We’ll learn from this, forget what went wrong, and focus on the semi‑final.”

The match started with a 32‑run opening partnership between Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, but King’s relentless line and length quickly changed the game. Wolvaardt, who finished 31 off 26 balls with seven fours, looked confident in the middle of the order. “It’s a real team effort,” she added. “We’re ready to step up for the next game.”

Wolvaardt stressed the importance of analysing mistakes but also of moving on. “After the game we try to put it behind us, learn from our errors like the inside‑edge mistakes, and then keep going,” she said. She believes the loss could act as a wake‑up call before the semi‑final.

South Africa’s next battle is against England, a team they were 69 all out against in their opener. Wolvaardt remained confident that the Proteas can turn the corner. “We’re used to playing England in semi‑finals. We’re hoping to finish the job this time,” she said.

The semi‑final spot in the Women’s ODI World Cup adds to the excitement for fans eager to see if South Africa can bounce back against a tough opponent and bring the trophy home.
