Noah Lyles turned a painful memory into pure triumph at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The American sprint star dashed to gold in the men’s 200m final on Friday, clocking an impressive 19.52 seconds. This win marks his fourth straight world 200m title, tying the legendary Usain Bolt’s record.
Lyles faced tough competition from fellow American Kenneth Bednarek, who took silver with a time of 19.58 seconds. Jamaica’s Bryan Levell grabbed bronze in a personal best of 19.64 seconds, edging out Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo, who finished fourth at 19.65 seconds.
The race kicked off with Levell leading at the halfway mark in 10.03 seconds, but Lyles shifted gears around the 150m point and powered ahead to victory. It was a sweet comeback for Lyles, who had won bronze here in Tokyo back in 2021 and struggled with mental health challenges at the time.
“I don’t have good memories from Tokyo in 2021. I was depressed then, but this time I’m energized. I love what I do, and I’m happy,” Lyles said after the race. He credited his patience and strategy for the win: “I studied my competitors. I knew their momentum would peak around 150m, but mine would build after that. I stayed relaxed and controlled the race.”
Now, Lyles has his sights set even higher. “I can’t wait for 2027 to become the only man to win five 200m titles,” he added, looking forward to the next Worlds in Beijing. He’s also eyeing gold in the 4x100m relay to cap off a strong championships.
Lyles’ face is all over Tokyo billboards, and he’s soaking it up. “This is amazing and such a joyous moment I’ll keep forever,” he shared. Fans are buzzing about this Noah Lyles world athletics championships highlight, proving why he’s one of the fastest men in the world.
