In Tokyo, India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra made it look easy as he qualified for the final of the men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships 2025. The two-time Olympic medallist nailed his first attempt with an 84.85m throw, comfortably clearing the 84.50m qualification mark without much effort.
As the defending champion, Neeraj finished third in Group A. His big rival, Germany’s Julian Weber, grabbed second place with a massive 87.21m effort to secure his spot in the final. Poland’s Dawid Wegner impressed everyone by hitting a personal best of 85.67m for second in the group and a ticket to the finals.
Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch, a top gold medal hopeful, came close but just missed automatic qualification with his season-best 84.11m, landing fourth.
Fellow Indian Sachin Yadav fought hard in Group A but couldn’t make the cut. He improved from 80.16m in his first throw to 83.67m in the second, then hit 82.63m on his final attempt, ending sixth in the group.
At 27, Neeraj has a golden history in javelin throw events. He made headlines by becoming the first Indian to win World Championships gold in Budapest 2023 with an 88.17m throw, beating Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem to silver (87.82m). Before that, he grabbed India’s first-ever World Championships silver in 2022, marking the nation’s first male medal at the event.
Now ranked world number two in javelin throw, Neeraj is eyeing a hat-trick of medals at these championships. His season started strong with a win at the Potch Invitational in South Africa in April. In May, he stunned fans at the Doha Diamond League by becoming the first Indian to cross 90m with a 90.23m throw, earning second place.
He kept the momentum going with another runner-up finish at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland that month. Neeraj then dominated with back-to-back victories at the Paris Diamond League (88.16m) and Ostrava Golden Spike (85.29m).
All eyes are on Neeraj Chopra as he gears up for the javelin throw final—can he add another medal to India’s proud athletics legacy?
