World Boxing Championships 2025: Minakshi assures fourth medal for India with a dominant performance against Pumphrey

Indian boxer Minakshi delivered a stunning performance at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool, securing India’s fourth medal with a dominant win in the women’s 48kg quarterfinals. The 24-year-old from Rohtak, Haryana, took on England’s young talent Alice Pumphrey and used her impressive reach to control the bout from the start. Judges gave her a clean 5:0 victory, booking her spot in the semifinals alongside Nupur in women’s 80+kg, Jaismine Lamboria in women’s 57kg, and Pooja Rani in women’s 80kg.

This marks a strong showing for India at the inaugural championships organized by World Boxing, the new global body for the sport. The Indian team, a 20-member squad fielded by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), is aiming high in both men’s and women’s categories.

In the men’s 50kg quarterfinals, debutant Jadumani Singh Mandengbam from India faced a tough challenge against Kazakhstan’s experienced Sanzhar Tashkenbay, a former world champion and two-time Asian winner. The 21-year-old put up a brave fight but fell short with a 0:4 defeat.

Excitement builds as Jaismine and Nupur gear up for their semifinals later today, chasing gold medal bouts. In women’s 57kg, Jaismine takes on Venezuela’s Paris Olympian Omailyn Carolina Alcala Cegovia. Meanwhile, Nupur, who won gold at the World Boxing Cup Astana, faces Turkey’s Seyma Duztas in women’s 80+kg. Interestingly, Nupur beat Duztas 5:0 in the semifinals of that Astana event too.

Nupur became the first Indian to guarantee a medal by reaching the women’s 80+kg quarterfinals on Wednesday. With more action ahead, Indian boxing fans are hoping for more podium finishes from this talented contingent.
