India Gets Off to a Great Start at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool
Liverpool, UK – September 4, 2023 – India kicked off their journey at the World Boxing Championships with a winning performance. Pawan Bartwal moved ahead for India by narrowly defeating Brazil’s Michael Douglas Trindade, a Paris Olympian, in a thrilling men’s 55kg match.
It was a close fight, with both boxers showing strength in the first two rounds. However, Bartwal stepped up his game in the final round, landing sharp punches that impressed the judges. His effort helped him win the round 3:2, securing India’s first victory at the tournament.
The competition is being held in Liverpool under the new World Boxing Council, an international body working to grow the sport worldwide. India has sent a 20-member team to compete in this historic event, aiming to leave a strong mark in global boxing.
Other Indian boxers are also in action this evening. Sakshi (women’s 54kg), Sanamacha Chanu (women’s 70kg), and Harsh Choudhary (men’s 90kg) will be competing in different weight classes.
Among the Indian contenders, 10 boxers have received favorable matchups, giving them a good chance to go far in the tournament. These include medal hopefuls like Hitesh Gulia (men’s 70kg), Abhinash Jamwal (men’s 65kg), Nikhat Zareen (women’s 51kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 70kg). Gulia, Jamwal, and Lovlina have a bye in the first round, meaning they don’t have to fight immediately, while Nikhat Zareen will face Jennifer Lozana from the USA.
India’s top fighters are experienced and eager to perform well. With Nikhat Zareen, a former world champion, and Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic bronze medallist, back in action, the team is feeling confident about their chances at this inaugural World Boxing Championships.
