Indian boxers shone bright at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, wrapping up with an impressive haul of four medals, including two sparkling golds. Jaismine Lamboria and Minakshi Hooda grabbed the spotlight as the new world champions, marking a proud moment for India in women’s boxing.
According to Olympics.com, Jaismine triumphed in the 57kg category, while Minakshi dominated the 48kg division. Nupur Sheoran snagged a silver in the 80+kg event, and Olympian Pooja Rani picked up a bronze in the 80kg category. These victories highlight India’s rising strength in international boxing under the new World Boxing governing body.
On Saturday, Jaismine pulled off a thrilling upset in the 57kg final against Poland’s top seed and Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist Julia Szeremeta. She won 4-1 by split decision, turning the fight around with smart moves and her height advantage after a tough start from Julia’s counter-attacks.
“I can’t even describe this feeling—I’m over the moon to be a world champion!” Jaismine said. “After my early exit at the Paris 2024 Olympics, I stepped back, worked on my technique, and built my mental and physical game. This is the payoff from a full year of hard training.”
Jaismine’s path to gold was flawless—she notched four straight 5-0 unanimous decisions. She beat Paris Olympian Omailyn Alcala from Venezuela in the semis, Khumoranobu Mamajonova of Uzbekistan in the quarters, Brazil’s two-time Olympian Jucielen Romeu, and Ukraine’s Daria-Olha Hutarina in the opener.
The next day, Sunday, Minakshi clinched the 48kg title with a close 4-1 win over Paris 2024 bronze medalist Nazym Kyzaibay from Kazakhstan. These golds make Jaismine and Minakshi the first Indian world champions under World Boxing, the fresh governing body for the sport. Earlier champs like Mary Kom, Nikhat Zareen, and Lovlina Borgohain won under the previous organization.
Three Indian boxers reached the finals overall. Nupur Sheoran came agonizingly close in the 80+kg showdown, losing 3-2 on a split decision to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska. Pooja Rani fought hard but fell 4-1 to England’s Emily Asquith in the 80kg semifinals, earning her bronze.
A total of 20 Indian boxers competed in Liverpool, including Olympic stars making a comeback post-Paris 2024. Lovlina Borgohain exited in the second round of the 75kg category, while Nikhat Zareen advanced to the quarterfinals in the 51kg event before a loss to Turkey’s two-time Olympic silver medalist Buse Naz Cakiroglu.
India’s performance at the World Boxing Championships shows the depth and determination in the country’s boxing scene, setting the stage for more global success.
