India Makes a Strong Start at World Boxing Championships in Liverpool
Liverpool, September 5 — Indian boxers kick-started their campaign at the World Boxing Championships with exciting wins, showcasing their talent and determination.
The day began with Pawan Bartwal delivering a thrilling performance in the men’s 55kg category. Facing Brazil’s Michael Douglas Trindade, a seasoned Olympian, Bartwal kept his cool under pressure and won a close fight with a final score of 3:2. His impressive skills, especially in the third round, helped him secure victory after a tough match that was level after the first two rounds.
Next up was Sakshi, who continued India’s winning streak. She faced Ukrainian boxer Viktoriia Shkeul and dominated from the start, winning the first round 5-0. In the second round, she finished strongly with an RSC (Referee Stopped Contest), earning an easy win and moving on to the next round.
Thokchom Sanamacha Chanu also had a challenging bout but emerged victorious. Competing in the women’s 70kg category, she defeated Denmark’s Ditte Frostholm with a score of 4-1. Her win ensures she advances to the next stage of the tournament.
Most of India’s top boxing stars enjoyed first-round byes, including Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, two-time World Championship medalist Nikhat Zareen, and promising boxers Hitesh Gulia and Abhinash Jamwal. This gave them a strong advantage as they avoided tough opponents early on.
Nikhat Zareen, a former world champion and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, is set to face Jennifer Lozana from the USA. Meanwhile, Gulia, Jamwal, and Lovlina are resting for now, planning to shine in the upcoming rounds.
India has sent a 20-member team to the World Boxing Championships, held under the new international governing body, World Boxing. The team is eager to make a mark and improve India’s reputation in global boxing. The return of star boxers like Nikhat and Lovlina, combined with their talented teammates, has raised hopes for a successful tournament.
