India’s para-athletics scene is buzzing with excitement as 35 athletes gear up for their big debut at the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships. This massive event kicks off from September 27 to October 5 at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the capital. For these talented Indian para athletes, it’s a chance to shine on the world stage right at home.
Leading the pack is Mahendra Gurjar, the star who just smashed a world record in the men’s F42 javelin throw with an incredible 61.17-meter effort at the Nottwil Grand Prix in Switzerland. Right now, he’s training hard in Patiala, aiming to keep that momentum going and make waves in his first World Para Athletics Championships.
You’ll find a bunch of fresh faces in the mix, including Atul Kaushik in Discus F57, Praveen in Shot Put F46, Haney in Discus F37, Mit Bharatbhai Patel in Long Jump T44, Manjeet in Javelin F13, Vishu in Long Jump T12, Pushpendra Singh in Javelin F44, Ajay Singh in Long Jump T47, Shubham Juyal in Shot Put F57, Birbhadra Singh in Discus F57, Dayawanti in Women’s 400m T20, Amisha Rawat in Women’s Shot Put F46, Anandhi Kulanthaisamy in Club Throw F32, and Suchitra Parida in Women’s Javelin F56. These Indian para athletes have trained relentlessly to reach this point, and fans can’t wait to see them compete.
Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India, couldn’t hide his pride. “We’ve never had so many Indian athletes debuting at a single World Championships before,” he said. “These debutants have beaten huge challenges to get here, and they carry the dreams of a whole new generation. We know they’ll motivate kids everywhere in India to pick up sports and aim high.”
Mahendra Gurjar echoed that sentiment, sharing his thoughts on the bigger picture. “This isn’t just about grabbing medals—it’s about proving to the world what Indian para athletes can do,” he said. “I really hope our efforts inspire more young people, especially girls, to follow their sports dreams.”
Mit Bharatbhai Patel, who’s jumping into the men’s long jump T44, is equally pumped. “Competing at this level with a home crowd cheering me on? It’s been my dream since day one of training,” he told us. “I’m so thankful for this shot and ready to do India proud.”
This New Delhi 2025 event marks a huge moment for Indian para sports—it’s the country’s largest para athletic showdown ever. Expect over 2,200 athletes and staff from more than 104 countries to battle it out in 186 medal events. And get this: it’s the first time India hosts something this grand, putting our para athletics on the global map.
