WPAC 2025: Heartbreak for India debutant Haney in men’s Discus Throw F37; two more World records set in New Delhi

India’s young para athlete Haney came close to a medal in his debut at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 in New Delhi, but heartbreaker strikes in the men’s discus throw F37 final. The 19-year-old from Rohtak led early with a strong 51.22-meter throw, keeping fans on edge. Yet, he couldn’t top that mark in later attempts, and pressure showed in his final effort of just 46.34 meters.

Mexico’s Luis Carlos Lopez grabbed gold with a stunning 56.59-meter throw on his second try, smashing the championships record. Ukraine’s Mykola Zhabnyak snagged bronze at 52.70 meters in the fourth round. Then, Japan’s Yamato Shimbo stole the show with a personal best of 54.50 meters on his last throw, jumping to silver and bumping Haney to fourth place.

The action didn’t stop there. Iran’s Saeid Afrooz set a new world record in the men’s javelin throw F34 final, hurling 41.52 meters—beating his own mark from last year’s Kobe event. Algeria’s Safia Djelal also made history in the women’s shot put F57, improving her previous world record to 11.67 meters. So far at these championships in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, athletes have shattered 21 world records and 65 championships records.

China’s Jin Hua sparked excitement with a championships record win in the women’s 1500m T54 final, boosting hopes of climbing the medals table over Brazil. But Brazil fought back strong, claiming the final two golds of the morning session. Bartolomeu da Silva, 24, took the men’s 400m T37 gold in 50.13 seconds—a new meet record. His teammate Maria C A da Silva followed with victory in the women’s 400m T47 at 56.17 seconds.

These wins solidify Brazil’s lead in the standings with 10 gold, 15 silver, and 7 bronze medals. China sits second at 8-10-7, ahead of Poland’s 7-1-5. India holds fourth place with 4 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze, showing promise in para athletics on home soil.
