A powerful blast ripped through a railway track on the stretch between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, sending train services into chaos, officials said Thursday.
The explosion hit the rails about five kilometres east of Kokrajhar railway station early on Thursday. An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, cratering the track and forcing the rail company to halt traffic on both the up and down lines.
Railway authorities sprang into action, stopping trains as a precaution. The scramble stranded dozens of trains at nearby stations and left hundreds of passengers waiting in the cold for hours. Emergency broadcasts urged passengers to stay calm and follow new instructions.
Firefighters, bomb‑disposal teams, and security forces rushed to the scene shortly after the blast. The track area was cordoned off while experts surveyed the damage and collected forensic evidence. Senior police and railway officials arrived to supervise repairs and guide the investigation.
So far, no injuries have been reported, but the blast has thrown off train schedules on this busy route. Authorities have yet to identify those responsible or disclose a motive. Security patrols are now tighter across Kokrajhar and neighboring districts as investigators work to pinpoint the perpetrators.
“At least one metre of track sustained damage, but we’ve fixed the track and trains are running again. We’re still probing the incident—whether it was an IED or another device—yet to give a definitive conclusion,” a senior police official told reporters.
Passengers who were stranded are gradually moving back on their journeys, while the rail network braces for any further disruptions as the investigation continues.
