New Delhi, Oct 15 – The Supreme Court has cleared the way for eco‑friendly “green” firecrackers to light up Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) from October 18 to 21. The ruling, issued by a bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, came after Delhi’s government asked for permission to allow certified green crackers for Diwali celebrations.
The court set clear limits. Fireworks can be fired only between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. each evening, and vendors must sell only green crackers that carry a QR code. Online sales of fireworks are banned, and the court instructed patrol teams to enforce the rules and stop any illegal products.
Delhi leaders welcomed the decision. BJP Delhi President Virendra Sachdeva praised the Supreme Court for supporting a “green Diwali” and criticised the previous Kejriwal administration for what he said was misinformation that led to a blanket ban. “Pollution isn’t caused by one day; it’s a wider problem,” he said.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra thanked Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for representing Delhi’s wishes before the court, calling the ruling a “welcoming step.” Parvesh Verma added, “We promised a traditional Diwali and the Supreme Court respected that promise.” Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the government will hold meetings to ensure proper implementation and thanked both the court and the Chief Minister.
In a related hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta outlined safeguards: sales will go through licensed traders, and only approved manufacturers can sell the green crackers.
This move aims to balance tradition with air‑quality concerns, allowing citizens to celebrate Diwali while keeping Delhi’s skies cleaner. The Supreme Court’s decision marks a key win for residents who want fireworks but also want to protect the city from pollution.
