In the Northeast, the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court has rolled out its first official mobile app, the GHCKB App, to help people access justice more easily and transparently. A High Court official noted that Justice Ashutosh Kumar, the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, formally launched the app on Thursday. Judges Sanjay Kumar Medhi and Arun Dev Choudhury, along with other officials, attended the ceremony.
During his remarks, Justice Ashutosh Kumar highlighted that the Kohima bench is the first in the region to introduce such a tool and that it was developed entirely in-house. He praised the bench’s ICT team for their effort and pointed out how smoothly the bench has adopted IT‑driven systems. Calling the app “citizen-friendly,” he explained that it offers real‑time updates, easy case tracking, and convenience for both lawyers and litigants.
The Chief Justice also emphasized the app’s role in promoting transparency, letting people—even those living far away—stay informed about court proceedings. He urged the Bar to make full use of this technology, noting that its value comes from frequent, regular use. He also mentioned that the app is backward‑compatible and works across most devices.
Reflecting on his visit to the Hornbill Festival in the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, Justice Ashutosh Kumar spoke about the camaraderie he witnessed and encouraged the legal community to bring that spirit into their professional lives. He urged young lawyers to prepare their cases thoroughly, recalling an instance where a junior attorney swiftly produced a judgment when asked. The CJ reminded attendees that the Kohima Bench has produced many prominent advocates who have ascended to the Supreme Court, and he encouraged the younger generation to keep striving for excellence.
“You’re not in a forgotten corner; you’re part of the mainstream,” he remarked, adding that each step forward aids personal growth. Registrar Ajongba Imchen, in his welcome address, said the Chief Justice’s presence underscored ongoing support for the Kohima Bench. He called the launch a milestone, saying that the app will bridge the bench, the Bar, and litigants by making key information readily available.
Imchen explained that the initiative brings case details, orders, cause lists, and other updates onto one platform, boosting transparency and empowering citizens. He noted that many members of the public ask how to find court orders, judgments, live‑streaming links, and daily cause lists, which can feel intimidating to those unfamiliar with legal procedures. “This application is a response to these practical difficulties,” he said.
The app is built to help all segments of society—including older people and students—and can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store. Features include daily cause lists, live‑streaming of court sessions, display boards, real‑time case status, links to both High Court and district court websites, a notice board, and a WhatsApp channel for updates. According to the bench official, the app is already available on the Google Play Store.
