Mamata Banerjee to address anti-SIR rally in Bengal’s Bangaon today

Kolkata: In order to sustain her party’s resistance to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will address a rally against the Election Commission’s efforts in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas, on Tuesday afternoon. According to the schedule, she’ll first speak at Trikon Park in Bangaon and then march in a protest through the town. It marks her second time leading an anti‑SIR rally and march; the first took place in Kolkata on November 4. The event comes just a day after Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee laid out plans to expand the anti‑SIR campaign to New Delhi. A dedicated team of ten Trinamool Congress MPs from both houses was set up to spearhead the movement in the capital and coordinate with top Election Commission officials. Sources say Bangaon was chosen because of its heavy Matua population, a community that has already been warned the SIR could remove their names from voter rolls. The Matua are a Hindu, backward‑class group who arrived as refugees from neighbouring Bangladesh and now settle mainly in Nadia and North 24 Parganas. Meanwhile, BJP leaders in the state have assured the Matua population that, aside from illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators who have slipped onto the voter list, there’s no cause for alarm regarding the revision exercise.
