Bhubaneswar turned chaotic in the Odisha Assembly on the third day of the Monsoon Session Saturday, as opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members unleashed a fierce protest over fertilizer scarcity and black marketing plaguing farmers across the state.

The session kicked off on a somber note, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi leading a condolence motion to mourn the death of former Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey. The tribal leader, a prominent ex-MLA, passed away that morning. Deputy Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya and Congress CLP leader Rama Chandra Kadam quickly supported the motion.

But calm didn’t last. As soon as Question Hour began, BJD lawmakers grabbed placards and banners, rushing to the well of the House and chanting slogans right in front of Speaker Surama Padhy’s podium. They demanded urgent action on the fertilizer crisis hitting Odisha hard.

Speaker Padhy urged the protesters to return to their seats and let the assembly run smoothly, but the uproar continued. Frustrated by the nonstop disruption, she adjourned the House until 4 p.m.

BJD leaders slammed the state government, accusing it of failing to supply enough fertilizer to farmers. They say desperate growers now face skyrocketing prices in the open market, fueling black marketing of fertilizers in Odisha. The party pushed to suspend regular business for a full debate on the issue.

On the other side, BJP leader Irasis Acharya fired back, calling out BJD and Congress for ignoring Odisha’s real development needs. He claimed the opposition ducks debates because they fear getting called out on their own record. Acharya stressed that only the BJP truly backs farmers and fights for their rights in the state.

This isn’t new—Friday’s session, the second day of the Monsoon Session, also collapsed in similar pandemonium after BJD members raised the same alarms about fertilizer shortages and black marketing.
