New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow Monday over the devastating road crash in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu, where at least twelve people lost their lives and around forty were injured.
In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office on X, Modi offered his condolences and announced financial aid for the families of the victims.
“The loss of lives due to a mishap in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon,” the PMO reported the Prime Minister’s words.
He added that each family member of a deceased passenger would receive an ex‑gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), while those injured would get ₹50,000.
The tragic head‑on collision happened Sunday evening near Kummangudi, close to Kundrakkudi, when two state government buses slammed into one another on a narrow stretch of road.
Officials described the impact as enormously severe; several passengers died instantly, and others were trapped within the wreckage.
Local residents rushed to the scene, helping police extricate survivors and transport injured riders to hospitals. Emergency crews worked late as new casualties were reported.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause. Early speculation points to possible overspeeding, reduced visibility, or driver fatigue, though a thorough probe is underway.
Police and transport officials examined the crash site on Monday, checking road conditions and collecting forensic evidence.
Injured passengers are now receiving treatment at hospitals in Sivaganga and Karaikudi, where medical teams are treating multiple fractures, head injuries, and other serious wounds. A few patients remain in critical condition, prompting doctors to keep extra emergency resources ready.
The disaster has drawn sorrow throughout the region, with leaders from across the political spectrum offering their sympathies. As rescue and medical operations continue, the state government is coordinating with local authorities to support the families of those killed and injured.
