Tensions Flare in Karnataka’s Maddur Over Ganesh Visarjan Violence
Hey folks, things got heated in Maddur town, Mandya district of Karnataka, after a violent clash during the Ganesh Visarjan procession. The Karnataka Police slapped prohibitory orders to keep the peace until Tuesday morning, but on Monday, the situation exploded again. Protesters gathered near the Ram Rahim Nagar mosque – the exact spot where stone-pelting kicked off the trouble – and ignored the orders, leading to a baton charge by police.
Police had to swing their lathis at the crowd, including women, because the group refused to back down despite repeated warnings. Stones started flying from the area, so authorities rushed in extra forces to control the chaos and restore law and order. As a result, Maddur turned into a ghost town on Monday, with all shops and businesses shut down amid the unrest.
This all stems from Sunday night’s Ganesh Visarjan violence, where stones were thrown from the mosque during the festival procession. Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who’s also the in-charge for Mandya district, didn’t hold back. He pointed fingers at the opposition, especially the BJP, accusing them of stirring up communal violence to derail development.
"These guys just don’t want progress," Cheluvarayaswamy said. "The stone-pelting happened Sunday night – I won’t deny it. We filed an FIR right away and arrested 21 people. No counter-case was lodged; the probe sticks to the complaint. But they’re still protesting, which shows their true colors."
He added that police acted swiftly out of respect for the Ganesh festival’s emotional importance. "The BJP wants to turn this into a full-blown communal clash – that’s their game plan," the minister fumed. When pressed on why police couldn’t stop the initial stone-pelting, he explained, "It wasn’t on the road; stones came from a distance. Peaceful protests are fine, but they need permission. The BJP can’t stand seeing our Congress government run smoothly in Karnataka, so they push for violence. You could see it in their Assembly speeches."
Cheluvarayaswamy has already looped in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Top officials like the Deputy Commissioner, IG, and SP are on the ground in Maddur, keeping a close watch. He even called it a "conspiracy" hatched by the BJP, JD(S), and some right-wing groups.
Mandya SP Mallikarjun Baladandi gave the latest update: "Prohibitory orders stay until Tuesday morning. We’ve registered two FIRs for the Ganesh Visarjan violence. Three policemen got injured in the fray. Out of the 21 arrests, two are from Channapatna, and the rest are locals from Maddur."
