Congress Warns Election Commission: We Won’t Stay Silent on Voter List Manipulations
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai fired off a strong warning to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday. He made it clear that the Congress party won’t sit quietly if anyone’s right to vote gets "stolen" through shady changes to electoral rolls.
Selvaperunthagai stressed that free and fair elections are the backbone of Indian democracy, and voting is a basic right for every citizen. "Denying this right or messing with voter lists is one of the biggest dangers to our democracy," he said in his statement.
He pointed to real-life examples from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, where thousands of voters discovered their names had vanished from the rolls without any notice. In just one constituency in Maharashtra, a whopping 9,850 voters got deleted, which he says seriously questions the ECI’s trustworthiness.
The TNCC chief also brought up Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s recent claims. Gandhi accused Delhi officials of tampering with Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls, calling it "deeply shocking."
Even after these alerts, Selvaperunthagai slammed the ECI for not starting a clear investigation. He quoted former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, who warned that brushing off these malpractice claims without checking them would damage the ECI’s reputation. "This is a national shame," Selvaperunthagai added.
He accused the Election Commission of shirking its responsibilities, which he says blocks citizens from voting and hits democracy hard—especially when people need to trust the system.
Selvaperunthagai demanded quick, open probes into these voter list irregularities and any electoral fraud. He called for tough legal action against those trying to block voting rights, plus the sacking of any careless officials.
Wrapping up, he issued a bold promise: "The Congress Party will never stay silent if citizens’ voting rights are taken away. Our fight to protect democracy will only grow stronger."
