GST reduction on drones to encourage wider adoption, boost domestic manufacturing

The Indian government has slashed the GST on drones from 18-28% to a flat 5%, making these flying gadgets more affordable and sparking excitement in sectors like farming, defense, and disaster relief. This move supports the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns, aiming to ramp up local drone manufacturing and widespread use across the country.

A government official explained that this uniform 5% GST rate applies to all drones—whether they have cameras or not—cutting out confusion over classifications and giving businesses the clear, predictable setup they need to invest in this fast-growing drone industry.

Drones are changing the game in India, from helping farmers spray crops efficiently to aiding the military in tough missions and speeding up rescue operations during disasters. The government is pushing hard to weave drone technology into everyday development, with cool initiatives like the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme. It equips women in self-help groups with drones for agriculture tasks, boosting farm output and creating new job opportunities for them.

In defense, the Indian Army’s Terrier Cyber Quest 2025 is all about using drones and other cutting-edge tech to tackle modern threats head-on. Plus, the government is making things easier for homegrown drone makers by offering low-cost certification through the National Test House, tying right into the ‘Make in India’ push.

India wants to become a global drone hub by 2030, and it’s backing that goal with smart steps. The Drone Rules 2021 loosened up regulations for easier flying, while the DigitalSky platform handles online permissions smoothly. There’s also the PLI Scheme for drones and parts to fire up local production, and Drone Shakti supports startups offering drone services. Training programs at DGCA-approved centers are building a skilled workforce, and events like Bharat Drone Mahotsav highlight homegrown innovations to build a strong drone ecosystem.

“This GST cut is a big win for India’s drone scene,” the government said. “It makes drones cheaper, sparks fresh ideas, speeds up their use in key industries, creates jobs, and helps turn India into a top player in advanced tech worldwide.”
