The Indian external affairs minister, S. Jaishankar, led a gathering of India’s senior diplomats in the United States on Friday, aiming to tighten ties between the two countries and boost support for the Indian diaspora. The conference, held in New York, brought together diplomats from the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and consulates in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle.
Jaishankar said on the social‑media platform X that the meeting “reviewed our bilateral ties and support for diaspora activities” and he praised the dedication of the embassy and consulates for strengthening India‑US partnership. He was also joined by India’s ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, who reinforced the message of collaboration.
Earlier the same week, Jaishankar met United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres at UN headquarters. He posted that the discussion covered the current global situation, multilateralism, and various regional hotspots. “We valued Guterres’s assessment of the current global order and its implications for multilateralism,” Jaishankar wrote.
Jaishankar’s trip to New York followed a stop in Canada, where he took part in the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting. He had a brief but meaningful meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, where they discussed trade, supply chains, the Ukraine conflict, and the Indo‑Pacific region. He also met with former US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who offered condolences for the Delhi blast and joined the conversation about trade and strategic cooperation.
The meeting came as US President Donald Trump hinted that the United States is close to signing a new trade agreement with India. Trump said that the deal would be “different” and “fair” and that it was “close” to completion, promising a win‑win for both sides.
Overall, the conference and the series of high‑level talks underscore a growing push by India to deepen its engagement with the United States, strengthen the Indian community abroad, and navigate key global issues together.
