Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), one of India’s top Maharatna companies, has stepped up big time for a major railway project in Mizoram. The company supplied around 15,000 metric tons of high-quality steel products to build the 51-kilometre Bairabi-Sairang railway line, as announced by the Ministry of Steel.
Breaking it down, SAIL delivered about 10,000 metric tons of premium R-260 Prime rails straight from its Bhilai Steel Plant. On top of that, it provided another 5,000 metric tons of key steel items like plates, TMT bars, and structural steel. These came from SAIL’s plants in Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, and Burnpur, ensuring everything meets top standards for this vital infrastructure push.
This Bairabi-Sairang railway project highlights India’s drive to connect every corner of the country better. SAIL’s massive contribution shows why it’s a go-to partner for nation-building, offering strong and reliable steel for essential projects like this one, the ministry added.
SAIL keeps playing a key role in Northeast India’s growth. It supplies steel for big sectors including infrastructure, railways, power plants, hydroelectric dams, and even border roads. This Mizoram project adds to SAIL’s impressive track record in powering landmark builds across India—think the Chenab Railway Bridge, Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal Broad Gauge line, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and bridges like Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Rs 8,070 crore project, finally linking Aizawl to the national railway network. To celebrate, three new train services kicked off: the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express, and Sairang-Kolkata Express. This move promises easier travel and boosts connectivity for the region.
