Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President after meeting Taliban FM

Maulana Arshad Mad — the head of the Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Hind — said on Saturday that the treatment of Afghan women is wrong. He explained that the same lessons are taught in boy‑only madrassas everywhere and that the recent absence of women journalists at an Afghan foreign‑minister press‑conference in New Delhi was a coincidence, not a ban.

Mad  reacted after Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi finished a month‑long visit to India. The Afghan diplomat had met the scholar at Darul Uloom Deoband and thanked the seminary and locals for a “warm welcome.” He also said that ties between the two countries could grow stronger.

During their meeting the two leaders talked about the historic ties that link Afghanistan’s struggle for independence with India’s fight against Britain. Mad  highlighted that Afghan people have long supported Indians in the past and that the faith communities in both countries share common values. He said there was no political discussion at the conference.

Mad  emphasised that India has long complained about Afghan‑backed terrorism. He assured reporters that the meeting demonstrates that no terrorist activity will come from Afghanistan into India.

The comments come after the Taliban, who took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, banned girls from secondary and higher education. The ban sparked controversy when New Delhi media reported that women journalists were not allowed to attend a press conference with the Afghan foreign minister on Friday. The event marked the first high‑level visit from Kabul in months and focused on reinforcing diplomatic links.

Muttaqi’s visit to India, from October 9 to 16, was a chance to strengthen practical cooperation and debate issues such as security, trade, and cultural ties. He described the reception at Deoband as “warm and welcoming” and said the future of India‑Afghanistan relations looks promising.

The story highlights the concerns about women’s rights in Afghanistan, the role of religious schools worldwide, and the broader diplomatic context between the two neighboring countries.
