India’s cricket board has handed the One‑Day International (ODI) captaincy to 26‑year‑old Shubman Gill, a decision praised by former England spinner Monty Panesar. Panesar said the move is a “masterstroke” because Gill is a natural leader who craves responsibility.
The change was announced on Saturday when Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that Rohit Sharma would step down as ODI captain. Gill will take over for the upcoming three‑match ODI series in Australia, starting on Oct. 19.
Reactions from fans and former players were divided, but Panesar welcomed the decision. “It’s a great move,” he said to . “Rohit can still support him, but when you give Gill responsibility he shows his best form. He’s a type of player who thrives under pressure, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him lead the T20I team in the future.”
Gill, who was named captain in a BCCI video message, expressed excitement about the new role. “Leading India in ODIs is a huge honour,” he said. “There are about 20 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, and my focus is to bring the trophy home.”
With the new captaincy, the Indian squad will travel to Australia for the ODIs. The side features top names like Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana, along with bowlers Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Khuyal-richy “Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
India’s cricket selectors have clearly signaled their confidence in Gill’s leadership. As the national team gears up for the 2027 World Cup, the move could ignite a fresh era for Indian ODIs and potentially set the stage for a strong T20I campaign under new leadership.
