On Thursday, a delegation from the Islamist party Jamaat‑e‑Islami, led by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, met with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin and his fellow commissioners at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka. The party urged the commission to make a definitive announcement about the poll timetable, noting that “time is running out to arrange the polls before the upcoming Ramadan”. Parwar told media that the schedule had not yet been released and that the commission had promised a decision this week. When pressed about a potential delay, he said, “We are not feeling any concern now. They have given us their word and shared their decision. We want to place our trust in that and believe they will adhere to that word.” Meanwhile, the commission has instructed Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar to be ready to broadcast the CEC’s address on December 10, when the election schedule is expected to be unveiled. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that letters had already been sent to the broadcasters, echoing Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman El Mashud’s statement that “The schedule will be announced through a speech on BTV and Bangladesh Betar. It could be on 10 December. There is no time left — the schedule must be declared by 11 December.” As the 2026 elections approach, the country is grappling with escalating political turbulence, with parties continually clashing over proposed reforms.
