British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday that the United Kingdom supports India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. The remarks came after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai.
Both leaders echoed their shared pledge to keep the world peaceful, prosperous and governed by a rules‑based order. They agreed to work closely on reforming multilateral institutions, especially the UN Security Council, and the UK reaffirmed its long‑standing backing for India’s aspirations to become a permanent member.
At a press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri echoed the UK’s support. “We have welcomed the United Kingdom’s backing of India’s goal of a permanent seat on a re‑formed Security Council,” Misri said. He also highlighted trade and investment as key priorities.
The UK and India signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in July, and the treaty is now in the ratification stage in both countries. Businesses in both sides are excited about the full implementation of the pact. The leaders discussed plans for future investment and deeper trade cooperation, with a focus on using the FTA’s tariff reductions to benefit both economies.
Yesterday marked the launch of the reconstituted India‑UK CEOs Forum, where the UK’s Secretary of State for Trade and Investment met India’s Commerce and Industries Minister. They reviewed the two nations’ trade relationship and re‑established the Joint Economic and Trade Committee, which will guide long‑term trade and investment policies and help implement the FTA.
Both sides also announced new joint investments aimed at boosting the Climate Technology Startup Fund, supporting entrepreneurs working on climate technologies and artificial intelligence. This initiative supports the FTA’s chapter on innovation and ties into the Technology Security Initiative (TSI).
Technology and innovation were highlighted as the second major focus area of the visit. Major announcements included the creation of the India‑UK Connectivity and Innovation Centre, the India‑UK Joint Centre for Artificial Intelligence, and a Critical Minerals Industry Guild to secure resilient supply chains and promote green technology. The leaders also agreed to launch phase two of the UK‑India Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory and to open a new satellite campus at IIT, the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad.
In addition, the leaders discussed expanding educational collaboration between the two countries, seeing education as a key pillar for strengthening bilateral ties.
