A new version of India’s Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will debut next year with a bold upgrade that makes the upper berths easier to climb and more comfortable for all passengers, a Vande Bharat project official said.
Nishank Garg, the director of the project at Kinet—the joint venture building the trains—told reporters that the latest design came from real passenger feedback. “People always felt that the upper berth was uncomfortable and hard to reach,” he explained. “We listened and redesigned it.”
The ladder that takes you up to the higher seats has been carefully engineered to provide safer, simpler access. “This feature will be on the very first train,” Garg added. “We’re moving fast to deliver it next year.”
Evgeny Maslov, the chief designer for Kinet, said the new layout reflects a broader vision for comfort and a fresh look at long‑distance rail travel in India. “This is how we want Vande Bharat to evolve,” he said.
Kinet Railway Solutions is a partnership between Russia’s Transmashholding and Indian Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). The joint venture is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining 1,920 sleeper coaches—120 trainsets—over a 35‑year contract.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the hard work that has gone into the project. “Over the last 11 years, we’ve built 35,000 km of new tracks, electrified 46,000 km, and produced 40,000 new coaches,” he noted, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on modernising India’s rail network.
