AAI, Coimbatore Corporation plan underground sewage system at airport

Coimbatore International Airport is getting a big upgrade to handle its sewage problems. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) are teaming up on a Rs 93-crore project to build better underground drainage and sewage management systems. Right now, untreated wastewater flows right through the airport grounds and even under the runway, causing headaches for everyone involved.

Sewage from nearby spots like Nehru Nagar, Tidal Park, and Brindhavan Nagar pours into the airport from the north. It crosses Avinashi Road and snakes about 600 meters inside the property. The channel is only partly covered, and it often clogs up with plastic and trash. That leads to nasty smells, pools of stagnant water, and flocks of birds showing up— a real risk for planes taking off and landing.

To fix this, the CCMC has drawn up a detailed plan for a closed underground canal that connects to a sewage treatment plant, or STP. After treatment, the clean water will head out to a natural drain flowing into the Aachankulam tank, keeping it away from the airport.

They’re eyeing two spots for the STP: one on the west side near Brindhavan Nagar, and another on the north where the drain runs under the runway. Officials say this ties right into the airport’s upcoming expansion, focusing on long-term fixes for safety and sustainability.

Construction could use a sturdy box culvert setup or big pipelines to move the treated water safely, far from flight paths. The Rs 93-crore price tag covers linking this with stormwater plans for the surrounding areas too. Right now, they’re hashing out how to fund and build it—maybe folding it into the airport expansion so AAI handles it directly or chips in for the CCMC.

Once done, this integrated drainage and STP system should wipe out old sanitation woes, cut down on bird hazards to boost flight safety, and give nearby neighborhoods a break from the bad odors and backups. It’s a win for the whole community around Coimbatore International Airport.
