Humayun Kabir moves Calcutta High Court seeking security cover

On December 9, the Calcutta High Court received a petition from Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, who asked for a security escort after saying his life was threatened.
The Trinamool Congress had just suspended him, accusing him of stoking communal tensions while promoting a mosque plan in Beldanga.
Kabir said he was the main organizer behind the proposed Babri‑style mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, a site that would mirror the contentious shrine in Ayodhya that was torn down on December 6, 1992. He added, “I have been getting life‑threatening calls since the foundation stone was laid on December 6. Although the Union Government offered me security, I declined it.”
When questioned about turning down the government’s offer, he explained, “The ruling Trinamool leaders already accuse the BJP of backing my initiative. If I had accepted the Centre’s security, the party would have turned up its negative campaigns to the extreme. So I have filed a case with the Calcutta High Court, and I will accept the security the court mandates.”
Kabir, a rebel in his party, is planning to launch a new political party on December 22 and reveal its leadership roster that same day. Although he had earlier promised to resign his Assembly seat before the launch, he has now decided to postpone his resignation, adding further uncertainty to the situation.
He has been censured on several occasions by Trinamool leadership for alleged anti‑party activities.
