In Kolkata, police arrested a woman on Tuesday after they discovered that she had drowned her three‑month‑old grandson in a pond near Domjur, Howrah district, West Bengal. The tragic incident happened that morning, prompting a full investigation into why it occurred. A senior officer of the Howrah Rural Police revealed that the accused, Sarithi Banerjee, confessed to the crime during questioning, admitting she had thrown the infant into the water and that the child died there.
“Her motive remains unclear,” the officer said. “We are working to uncover what drove her to commit such a heinous act.”
According to police reports, the baby’s father, Abhijit Banerjee, is a night‑shift worker. His wife, Moyna Banerjee, had brought her own mother to Abhijit’s house so that the newborn would not have to sleep alone. On Sunday, Moyna and her mother left for her maternal home to get some work done, and later returned with Abhijit’s mother—Sarithi—to care for the child. For the next two days, the three‑month‑old was under the care of his paternal grandmother.
On Tuesday morning, after finishing her shift, Moyna went back to the house and panicked when she saw the baby’s bed empty. She burst into tears, and neighbours hurried over after hearing her cries. A frantic search quickly began.
Within an hour and a half, the neighbours spotted the child’s body bobbing in a nearby pond. The Domjur police station was notified immediately. Officers arrived at the scene, extracted the infant, and transported him to Domjur Rural Hospital, where doctors confirmed he was dead upon arrival.
Immediately after the body was recovered, suspicion fell on Sarithi, who had been supervising the baby for two days. Under pressure from Moyna and the neighbors, Sarithi admitted she had thrown the child into the pond. She was taken into custody, and the investigation is still ongoing.
