President Droupadi Murmu handed out the 71st National Film Awards in New Delhi on Tuesday, celebrating top talents across various categories. The ceremony highlighted outstanding work in Indian cinema, drawing attention from film fans nationwide.
In a special moment, Murmu presented the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023 to South Indian superstar Mohanlal. She praised him for his incredible range, saying he masterfully captures everything from the gentlest emotions to the toughest ones, earning him the title of a “Complete Actor.”
Speaking to the crowd, Murmu congratulated all the winners and shared her thoughts on the power of cinema. “Indian films aren’t just entertainment—they’re a strong tool for sparking awareness in society and making people more empathetic,” she said. She pointed out that while box-office hits are great, movies that serve the public good, especially for young viewers, matter even more.
Murmu encouraged everyone in the film industry to push for greater global recognition. “Let’s work to make Indian cinema loved worldwide, boosting its popularity and acclaim,” she urged.
The President expressed delight over the rise of women-centric films and their successes. Many of the award-winning stories focused on powerful themes: mothers guiding their children’s values, women teaming up against outdated stereotypes, the struggles of women in family and society, and brave voices challenging patriarchal inequalities. She gave a shoutout to the sensitive filmmakers behind these impactful tales.
Murmu also reflected on how India’s massive film industry mirrors the world’s largest democracy and its rich diversity. “Our movies carry an Indian spirit that ties together local stories with a national feel,” she noted. Just like Indian literature thrives in multiple languages, cinema blooms across dialects, regions, and cultures—staying rooted locally while resonating broadly.
