Virginia cat café shutters for rest of year after mischievous kitten floods business in ‘series of freak accidents’

“Curiosity killed the cat café.”
A popular cat‑café in Richmond, Virginia, was forced to close for good after a mischievous kitten set off a series of costly “freak accidents.” The Purrfect Bean, which had opened its doors in August, was badly damaged when the 5‑month‑old tuxedo kitten Roller, who loves to pounce on his brothers and even stray towels, knocked over a bathroom sink. The resulting flood leapt from the upstairs kitty lounge down into the main floor, causing widespread water damage—flooring, ceilings, walls, the espresso machine, and the grinder all needed replacement.
Although none of the resident cats, including the black‑and‑white rascals, were harmed, the flood left many of them soaking or standing on the furniture in the cozy nook. The owners have said that the shop will likely remain shut for the rest of the year, pending major repairs. In the meantime, the kittens are staying comfortably at their foster homes.
To cover the extensive repair costs and support the staff who have lost work during the holidays, the café is hosting a local pay‑what‑you‑can fundraiser at Byrd Park. The event will be highlighted by TikTok’s “The Tiramasu Guy” and a local Matcha cart, “Find Your Exit Plan.” A GoFundMe page has also been created to help keep the cafe’s employees afloat.
The Purrfect Bean has already welcomed nine kittens into homes and logged more than 100 successful adoptions since opening. Each newly adopted kitten’s photo is photographed, then pinned on an overflowing corkboard near the front door as a tribute to the café’s community spirit.
