Swear by Quran, did not seek alliance with BJP in 2024 for Statehood: Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, Nov. 9 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has publicly denied accusations that he sought an alliance with the BJP in 2024. In a post on X, he said, “I swear on the Holy Quran that I didn’t seek an alliance with the BJP for statehood or any other reason.” The statement was a direct response to BJP leader and opposition leader Sunil Sharma, who claimed Abdullah had gone to Delhi to discuss a coalition.
Sharma had challenged the chief minister to swear in a mosque about the same allegation. He urged, “Swear on the Quran you didn’t seek a BJP alliance for statehood in 2024.” Abdullah’s reply, which he shares with his followers online, rejects the claim and calls Sharma a liar.
The exchange comes as campaigning for two key by‑polls—a month after the 2024 assembly elections—has reached its final day. The seats of Nagrota and Budgam will be contested on Nov. 11.
In the Budgam by‑poll, president of the National Conference, Omar Abdullah, had earlier held two seats (Budgam and Ganderbal) after the 2024 elections, but he resigned from Budgam to trigger the election. The National Conference contends that the BJP, PDP, Apni Party and others have joined forces to defeat its candidate, Aga Mehmood.
Nagrota’s seat became vacant after BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana died on Oct. 31. The BJP has nominated his daughter, Devyani Rana, to run in the by‑poll.
These developments underscore a tense political atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir, as parties vie for influence in the region’s assembly.
