CAQM reviews dust mitigation step on Gurugram roads

The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) spent the weekend conducting a comprehensive review of dust‑control practices on Gurugram’s roads. An official explained that the inspection, carried out on Friday, was part of the city’s ongoing enforcement under the existing Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Seventeen teams – fifteen from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and two from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) – were dispatched to examine 125 road stretches within the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) jurisdiction. The teams collected geo‑tagged, time‑stamped photographs, which were compiled into a consolidated report for the Commission.

The findings were stark. Of the 125 roads inspected, 34 showed high dust levels, 58 had moderate dust, 29 were low, and only four exhibited no visible dust. The areas with high dust were often littered with municipal solid waste, construction and demolition (C&D) debris, and open burning. Such widespread pollution was noted across various wards, residential colonies, internal roads, and key arterial routes.

The Commission underscored that these conditions reflected significant gaps in routine street cleaning, waste disposal, and enforcement of open‑burning bans. It called for stronger on‑ground action by the MCG, including regular mechanical sweeping, prompt removal and proper disposal of waste, consistent water sprinkling, and stricter control of open fires.

“Continued, focused action is essential for real improvement in road conditions and to halt the re‑accumulation of dust and waste,” the statement added.
