Sanjay Garg has been named the new Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the country’s main body that sets rules for product and service quality. He took office on November 1, 2024, after the Ministry of Consumer Affairs cleared the appointment.
Garg is a veteran IAS officer from the 1994 Kerala batch. His career spans more than 30 years, covering agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion and finance at both state and central levels. Before leading BIS, he was the Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education and the Secretary of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR). There, he drove digital change in research management and helped launch the Kisan Sarathi portal, which connects farmers directly to scientific experts.
He also managed several World Bank projects in India and worked on easing rules for the defence and leather industries. These experiences give him a broad perspective on how standards can boost economic growth and protect consumers.
As BIS chief, Garg will guide the development of national standards, certify products, oversee conformity checks and manage hallmarking of precious metals. His leadership will help India meet consumer protection, food safety and environmental goals.
In addition, Garg will represent India on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In this role, he will bring Indian views to worldwide standards for electrical and electronic technology, ensuring national priorities align with global best practices.
