Jury finds man guilty of attempting to assassinate Trump on golf course

A Florida jury has convicted Ryan Routh of trying to assassinate Donald Trump during a golf outing last year, marking a major win for justice in a high-stakes case.

The incident unfolded on September 15, 2024, at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, just 15 minutes from his Mar-a-Lago home. At the time, Trump was the Republican presidential nominee, and this attempt came only weeks before the November 2024 election. It followed closely on the heels of another close call in Pennsylvania two months earlier, where a bullet grazed Trump’s ear.

Routh, a 59-year-old man, now stands guilty on serious charges: attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and three federal firearms offenses tied to the event. He’s looking at life in prison when he gets sentenced soon.

During the trial in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, Judge Aileen Cannon presided over the proceedings. Routh even represented himself as his own lawyer, adding to the drama of the case.

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi celebrated the verdict in a statement, saying it shows the Department of Justice’s strong stance against political violence. “This attempted assassination was not only an attack on our president, but an affront to our very nation itself,” she added.

Trump himself reacted on social media, calling it “a very big moment for JUSTICE IN AMERICA.” The ruling comes amid ongoing concerns about threats to political figures in the US.
