India, Nepal to launch 19th ‘Suryakiran’ military exercise in Uttarakhand tomorrow

Dehradun: India and Nepal will host the 19th edition of the annual bilateral military exercise, Suryakiran, from 25 November to 8 December in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

The joint drill is designed to bolster operational cooperation for jungle warfare and counter‑terrorism missions in mountainous regions. It also places a strong emphasis on integrating specialized technology to improve interoperability, while crews share best practices. These efforts reflect both countries’ common commitment to global peace and security and further deepen defence ties, friendship, and trust between the two armies.

The exercise, which alternates yearly between India and Nepal, gathers forces from both sides for a month‑long training event. In the previous 18th iteration, a 334‑member Indian contingent participated in the Battalion‑Level Joint Military Exercise Suryakiran in Saljhandi, Nepal, from 31 December 2024 to 13 January. There, participants sharpened operational readiness, aviation skills, medical training, and environmental stewardship.

Through these activities, troops refined combat techniques and strengthened coordination for challenging operations. The event also offers a platform for soldiers from both nations to exchange ideas, observe each other’s procedures, and deepen mutual understanding.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and Nepal maintain a long‑standing, mutually productive relationship in defence and security. India has played an integral role in modernising the Nepal Army by supplying equipment and providing regular training. It has likewise led humanitarian assistance and disaster‑relief efforts in Nepal, notably during the 2015 earthquake and the COVID‑19 pandemic.
