Kennedy Jr. After the holiday cease‑fire of RFK Jr.’s campaign, Lizza alleges the couple had mapped out a private encounter on August 23, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona, “planned to consummate their relationship,” according to the scorned ex‑fiancé who first heard of the deal while covering a nearby Trump rally.

He says the couple chose Phoenix because the media attention would be lower once Kennedy stepped back from the presidential race and his Secret Service protection would no longer be a hurdle. Lizza even speculated that Kennedy’s wife, Cheryl Hines, would likely be absent that night, smoothing the path for the supposed tryst.

But the plan fell apart when Lizza’s work as a Politico correspondent overlapped with the rally. He was scheduled to report on the event, and that job role forced him to learn of the affair. “Olivia reluctantly canceled her rendezvous with Bobby,” Lizza writes, noting that Kennedy was about to become a key player in the Trump world, a timing that helped Lizza both pull away from the story and later cut ties with Nuzzi.

In the fallout, Nuzzi’s own career has come into question. While she has turned the affair into a memoir—she hints at Kennedy as “the politician” in a book that follows her October 2023 profile of him—she has denied any real relationship with the senator‑activist. Meanwhile, Roman Kennedy has been quick to reject the story entirely.

Now, editors at Vanity Fair are reportedly re‑evaluating Nuzzi’s position after Lizza’s revelations went public.
