Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi condole 15 deaths in Himachal bus tragedy

New Delhi, India – A private bus struck by a landslide in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, killed 15 passengers and injured several others. The tragedy, which happened on a steep road after heavy rains, has drawn strong reactions from political leaders and sparked large‑scale rescue operations.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the chief of the Congress party, posted his condolences on X, saying the state government was “working on a war footing” to find survivors and help families. He added that the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government was providing all possible support.

Priyanka Gandhi also expressed her sorrow, calling the incident heartbreaking and wishing comfort to the bereaved. Haryana chief minister Narendra Singh Saini described the accident as “heart‑wrenching” and urged the community to stay strong.

The bus, carrying between 25 and 30 people, was hit by falling debris on a hilly stretch. Local police and the State Disaster Response Force rushed to the scene immediately. Nine men and four women were recovered, and two injured children were taken to AIIMS Bilaspur for treatment.

Officials say rescue crews, including the National Disaster Response Force and sniffer dogs, are still combing the area for any more victims. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri confirmed that 15 people died and about 18 were rescued, with three admitted to the hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh per deceased for their families. The injured will receive Rs 50,000 from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh also extended condolences and praised the efforts of the emergency teams. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the debris, but the terrain and intermittent rain have made the job difficult.

The incident highlights the continued risk of landslides in Himachal Pradesh’s mountains, especially after heavy rainfall. The government remains on alert and continues to search for additional survivors while supporting the affected families.
