Blast in illegal firecrackers unit in Ghaziabad village, several injured

A huge blast tore through Masuri village in Ghaziabad on December 5, shattering part of a rented home and sending smoke billowing up into the sky. The explosion happened while people were secretly assembling firecrackers inside the house, a clear violation of safety norms. The shockwave smashed doors and ripped the roof off, leaving many residents scrambling for safety and fearing another blast.

Shortly after the incident, a 112 call alerted authorities to the danger. Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene and found a man named Danish—who had been making the firecrackers himself—heavily injured. A few others nearby sustained only minor wounds, and thankfully no one died.

The incident did not spark any major public disorder, but officials immediately launched legal action. They plan to file charges under the relevant sections that cover illicit explosives production and handling. Assistant Commissioner of Police Lipi Nagaich confirmed the developments, saying she’d received the 112 call on December 4 and that investigations are still underway.

This tragedy underscores the growing problem of unregulated firecracker workshops that ignore safety standards and licensing regulations. In India, rules such as Rule 15(4) of the Explosives Rules, 2008 mandate that manufacturers disclose the chemicals and their quantities used in firecrackers, yet they do not require firms to list environmental or health impacts on packaging. The Government’s 1992 notification bans the use of sulfur with potassium chlorate or other chlorates in firecrackers, except for specific cases like scientific research or match production, but there are currently no plans to outlaw other chemicals used in the trade.
