Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm congratulations to Sushila Karki on Saturday as she stepped into the role of Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Heartfelt congratulations to the Honourable Sushila Karki Ji on assuming the office of Prime Minister of Nepal interim government. India is fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of Nepal brothers and sisters.”
This move highlights the strong India-Nepal ties, built on a shared 1,751 km border stretching across five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The two nations enjoy deep people-to-people connections, along with common threads in religion, language, and culture that make their relationship special.
Under India’s Neighbourhood First policy, PM Modi has visited Nepal five times since May 2014, while Nepali Prime Ministers have made ten trips to India in the same period. These exchanges show how both countries prioritize close collaboration.
The change in Nepal’s leadership came swiftly after the Parliament dissolved late Friday, with fresh elections now set for March 5, 2026. This happened just hours after Karki took her oath as the interim Prime Minister. Nepal’s President Office announced the dissolution during the first cabinet meeting at 11 pm, kicking off a six-month transitional government to guide the country toward the polls.
Karki, a former Chief Justice, made history by becoming Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister. She was sworn in at Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence in Kathmandu. Her appointment followed the resignation of KP Sharma Oli earlier this week, triggered by weeks of youth-led anti-corruption protests demanding greater political accountability.
The new cabinet’s key tasks include restoring order and laying the groundwork for the Federal Parliament elections next year. Interestingly, Karki’s selection reflects a rare unity in Nepal’s often turbulent politics. She won support through a public vote on Discord, organized by Gen Z leaders, making her a popular choice among young activists and established political groups alike. This blend of youth energy and credibility could bring much-needed stability during these challenging times.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs quickly welcomed the interim government’s formation, stating it hopes to boost peace and stability in the Himalayan nation. The MEA added that India remains dedicated to working hand-in-hand with Nepal for the prosperity and well-being of people on both sides of the border.
