“Our future is bright,” Taliban FM says on Deoband visit sidelines

Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, stopped in the northern Indian city of Saharanpur on Saturday and visited the historic Darul Uloom Deoband. There he met Maulana Arshad Madani, the president of the Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Hind, and the two discussed the past and future of India‑Afghanistan ties.

Muttaqi opened the visit by thanking the Deoband community for their warm welcome. He said he would pray for deeper cooperation between the Taliban‑run Afghan government and India. “After the meeting in Delhi, I can tell you that our future is bright,” he told reporters in both cities. The Emir hopes visits between Kabul and Delhi become more frequent.

In front of a large audience, Maulana Madani emphasized that the meeting was not about politics but about history. He reminded the Afghan minister that Afghan fighters once helped Indian freedom struggle leaders. “We fought Britain together,” the Maulana said. “We learned from each other’s courage against foreign powers.” He also stressed the importance of harmony across religions and nations.

The two leaders said they had no political talks, but they promised to keep the dialogue lines open. The Jamiat Ulema‑e‑Hind said the meeting should allay India’s concerns that Afghanistan might send terrorists into its borders. The Afghan foreign minister echoed that sentiment and pledged that no Afghan fighters would infiltrate India.

The day’s talks reflected growing optimism in the relationship between the Taliban‑led Afghan administration and India. Both sides thanked the Deoband clergy and local residents for their hospitality. The Afghanistan foreign minister said, “The journey has been very good so far. Not just the people of Darul Uloom, but all the people of the area have come here. I am grateful to them for the warm welcome they extended to me.”

Overall, the meeting underscored a hopeful trajectory for India‑Afghanistan relations and highlighted a shared history of cooperation and mutual respect.
