Woman dies after delivery at Thiruvananthapuram MCH; family claims medical negligence

Thiruvananthapuram, November 9 – A 26‑year‑old woman from Karikkakam, Shivapriya, died after giving birth at SAT Hospital for Women and Children in Thiruvananthapuram. Her family says the hospital’s care was negligent, pointing to a deadly infection that started after she was discharged.

Shivapriya delivered a baby boy on October 22 and left the hospital three days later, on October 25. A few days after returning home, she developed a fever and other symptoms. The family rushed her back to the hospital, where her condition worsened quickly.

Her brother, Shivaprasad, said Shivapriya was moved to the medical college’s multispecialty ward once the infection spread. “She spent two days in the ICU and then needed a ventilator,” he told reporters. By Sunday noon, doctors announced that she had passed away.

The family believes the infection began at the stitches from the delivery. “The bacteria, Acinetobacter, is common in hospitals, but it shouldn’t have spread to her bloodstream and lungs,” Shivaprasad said. He added that Shivapriya had no complications during her first delivery two and a half years ago, suggesting hospital negligence this time.

Shivapriya is survived by her husband, Manu, a welder, and their two children, one of whom is a newborn. The family has asked the health authorities to launch an inquiry into how the infection developed and to take strict action if hospital staff failed to follow proper protocols.

SAT Hospital Superintendent Bindu denied any negligence. “The infection appears local. If it was contracted during her stay, symptoms would have shown up much earlier,” she said. Bindu also said no similar infections had been reported by other patients in the ward and that she was waiting for a detailed medical report before making a final judgment.

The Kerala Health Department is expected to review the case soon, following the family’s complaint. The incident has raised concerns about post‑delivery care and antibiotic safety, especially in busy hospitals like SAT and the regional medical college.
