PM Modi to review progress of bullet train project at Surat Station today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will head to Gujarat this Saturday to check on India’s latest big‑ticket project: the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad High‑Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). The PM is slated to arrive at the under‑construction bullet‑train station in Surat around 10 a.m. and give a walk‑through of the site.

The MAHSR stretches 508 kilometres across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It will link major metros such as Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai. About 352 km of the line lie inside Gujarat and the Union Territory, while 156 km cut through Maharashtra.

To keep the route safe and efficient, designers plan to build roughly 85 % of the corridor—about 465 km—on elevated viaducts. This design reduces land disruption and helps the trains maintain high speeds. Project officials say they have already finished 326 km of the viaduct and placed 17 of the 25 planned river bridges.

When the bullet train opens, it will cut the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around two hours. The faster link will transform business trips, boost tourism, and create a tighter economic belt between the two cities. Officials expect the corridor to attract fresh investment, spur new development projects, and lift the regional economy.

Surat’s role in the project is especially critical. The Surat‑Bilimora stretch, about 47 km long, is one of the most advanced sections. Surveyors report that all civil works and track‑bed laying in that area are complete. The Surat station itself has been designed to echo the city’s famed diamond industry, putting modern style right beside everyday convenience. Travelers will find spacious lounges, clean restrooms, and retail shops, all linked to the Surat Metro, city bus lines, and the national rail network.

Surat’s rail hub is evolving quickly. Under the Railway Station Redevelopment Programme, planners are raising passenger amenities, expanding concourses, and improving the flow of people through the station. As a result, Surat now ranks among western India’s most modern and strategically important transit points.

India’s push for high‑speed rail represents a bold step forward. By bringing faster, safer, and more reliable travel to its busiest corridors, the government hopes to keep pace with global standards and meet growing passenger demand. Prime Minister Modi’s visit underscores the project’s priority: delivering a new era of connectivity for the nation.
