Andhra Pradesh to become drought-proof with best water management, says CM Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has big plans to turn the state into a drought-proof haven with top-notch water management. Speaking in the assembly about the irrigation system, he pushed hard for linking rivers within the state to make sure every corner gets enough water.

Naidu explained that they’ll map water reserves by installing sensors at key water projects. These will track both groundwater levels and rainwater to keep everything in check.

He stressed that smart, data-driven decisions will lead to perfect water management. “Development can’t happen without water,” Naidu said, urging everyone to back a ‘one state, one water policy’ and support intra-river linking projects.

Right now, thousands of tmc of water from the Godavari and Krishna rivers simply flow into the sea, going to waste. Interlinking these rivers could change that, channeling surplus floodwaters to needy areas and ensuring water supply across all regions.

In a bold commitment during the assembly session, Naidu promised to finish the Polavaram project by December 2027 and the Veligonda project by July 2026. He also vowed to wrap up all other irrigation projects in Rayalaseema and North Andhra within two years, bringing water security to every part of Andhra Pradesh.

Naidu shared a personal win that made him proud: successfully delivering Krishna river water to Kuppam via the Handri-Neeva project. Workers completed 738 km of canal works in one go to make it happen.

Despite a 2.1% rainfall deficit this year, good news poured in—groundwater levels rose, and 94% of major and minor reservoirs and tanks are full to the brim. The state’s groundwater reserves now stand at 697 tmc.

He urged all MLAs to step up and boost groundwater in their constituencies.

On the funding front, the NDA government has already poured Rs 12,000 crore into the irrigation sector in just one year. Naidu assured they’ll invest a whopping Rs 60,000 crore over the next five years to build a stronger water future for Andhra Pradesh.
