West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee visits flood-affected Jalpaiguri, urges people to maintain “restraint and caution”

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, visited the flood‑hit town of Jalpaiguri on Monday after a series of heavy rains devastated north‑west Bengal. In a speech to residents, she urged people to stay calm, keep their cool and work together to weather the crisis.

The CM said that many families have suffered badly and that unity and patience are the state’s biggest assets. “We must not lose courage or let rumours spread,” she told a crowd. “The government is fully with you, and together we will overcome this disaster.”

She asked police and local officials to focus on those living in low‑lying areas and to move them to safer ground. Rescue teams continue to work in the hardest hit spots, and community kitchens have opened to feed the displaced.

In a separate announcement, Banerjee revealed a Rs 5 lakh ex‑gratia payment for each family that lost a member in the floods. She also created special Homeguard jobs for a relative of each deceased person as a gesture of support.

The state is also handling tourist evacuation. Special Volvo buses are being run by the North Bengal State Transport Corporation to move stranded visitors, and hotels that lose guests will refund their accommodation at the government’s expense.

Officials confirmed that at least 18 people died in heavy rains over Darjeeling district. Eleven of the deaths occurred in Mirik, four in Jorebunglow, two in Sukhia Pokhari, and one in Darjeeling Sadar, as of October 5‑6. The authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations across the affected areas.
